Welcome to the February newsletter.
If you made a new year’s resolution to be healthier during 2012 but haven’t done anything about it yet, then start by identifying some goals you would like to achieve. Most people tend to focus on weight loss as a goal but you should think about how to get there. For example, if you want to reduce your body fat by 5%, then your goals for the remainder of 2012 might be:
- Commit to a minimum of 3 x 45-60 minutes cardio sessions per week;
- Have at least 3 alcohol-free days each week; and
- Do the City to Surf (only 6 months away now).
Write down your goals on a piece of paper and stick it on your fridge as a constant reminder to yourself.
In this issue:
- Smartphone App Providing Traffic Light Rating for Foods.
- FebFast.
- Waverton to Harbour Bridge Walk.
- Interesting Stuff.
Eat well and train hard.

Smartphone App Providing Traffic Light Rating for Food
A new smartphone app (currently for iPhones/iPads only) has just been released, which gives a traffic light rating for food based total fat, saturated fat, sugars and salt.
The “FoodSwitch” app uses your smartphone’s camera to scan barcodes of packaged foods and it rates the food based the amount of total fat, saturated fat, sugars and salt per 100 grams, and suggests similar foods that are healthier choices.
FebFast
FebFast invites people to sacrifice their alcohol intake during the shortest month of the year, and at the same time, raise money to support programs for young people with alcohol and other drug problems. Imagine what this can do for your waistline, your wallet and your liver!
The $25 registration fee allows you to build a personalised online fund-raising page. If you have a special event in February like a birthday, you can purchase a “Time Out” to have a guilt-free day off from your FebFast so that you can enjoy the event. But you will have to resume your participation in FebFast the next day.
For more information, visit the FebFast website at FebFast.org.au.
Waverton to Harbour Bridge Walk
The social event for February will be a walk from Waverton to the Harbour Bridge. Starting from Balls Head Reserve at Waverton, we will follow Berrys Bay to McMahons Point, past Luna Park and onto the Harbour Bridge, where we will then climb the 200 steps to the top of the Pylon Lookout (pylonlookout.com.au). After checking out the panoramic views of the city and harbour we will walk back to Waverton via Lavender Bay. The total distance of the walk is approximately 10 kilometres.
